Day 50:Getting our Hike On

The weather was great yesterday when we did laundry, but today, rain this morning but it cleared off enough to go for a hike. We are still in Terra Nova National Park for a few days so we hiked a local trail from our campground here in Newman Sound. It was an out an back shoreline trail. The sun came out for spurts, but mostly cloudy. The hike was almost 6 miles and relatively flat. Finished up the day with dinner by Yoli, chicken, potatoes, and gravy, it was excellent. We hit the bed about 9:30pm and watch a couple episodes of "Your Honor" on Netflix, since we finished up "White Collar" the other day. Let see what tomorrow brings.

Day 49: Terra Nova National Park

The wind was blowing 30mph on shore last night and made for a rough night on the beach. A bit of rain as well. No hiking, no adventures, but it was sunny and nice today, so we hit the road to Terra Nova National Park. We decide to stay in a National Park so we could dump the tanks fill with water, do laundry, and soak up some amenities like formal Hiking trails. Terra Nova is a large park much like Gros Morne. The Norman Sound campground we are in has over 250 campsites, and we snagged a good one and set up camp for a couple days to hike the trails in the park.

Day 48: Deadmans Bay

Banting Park Info Center

Today was a rain day, boooo! but we got out anyway and went into the local town of Musgrave Harbour, Lumsden, and Living Heritage village. All within 20 miles up and down the beach. We talk to locals, take some pics, get gas, buy some groceries, but not much of an adventure day due to rain.

Day 47: Ferry Day

Fogo Ferry

Today, we leave Fogo Island. Its a short 40 minute ride, but traffic was heavy so we ended up waiting in line for 4 hours as they only had room for 2-3 long rigs and we had several semi-trucks ahead of us. It was a nice sunny day with a great view at the port, so not a bad day, just no adventure. We make the short ride, then about 45 miles to our spot on the beach, Deadman's bay. This is a free boondock spot right on the ocean, so much better than paying $25-35can for a rustic camp ground in the woods infested with mosquitos. We love ocean views, and free.

Day 46: Hiking Fogo

Sandy Cove, Boondock spot

So many trails, and so little time to explore all the beautiful hikes that await those that forage out to Fogo Island. We are only here for 4 days, so we need to pick the best of the hikes. We head to the town of Fogo for the Brimstone Head Trail, marked as one of the four corners of the world by the flat world society. Don't worry, we were careful not to fall of the edge of the earth. The. Brimstone trail is actually on an island that is off of Fogo Island, off of Newfoundland Island. So needless to say it is remote. We hike it, we like it, we got the pics, check that box, one corner of the world done. We also hike Fogo head trail, and I also do the Courting trail that leads to another studio building, the Bridge Studio part of the 4 or 5 art studio buildings. Amazingly, the sun came out mid day, and we soaked up some sun time until early evening when the fog rolled in at camp. We have happy hour on the beach, watch the fog roll in, then call it a night with left overs for dinner, and some binge watching on netflix, thanks to Starlink.

Day 45: Exploring Fogo

With the cooler weather, we set out to explore Fogo Island by car today. We first head deeper into Tilting Cove where we are staying at a municipal beach park just outside of town. First stop, a hike to one of five art studio's on the island setup to house artists to create and live in disconnected beautiful landscape. These are modern structures of architecture contrasted in the wilderness of Fogo Island. These studios are out growths of the Fogo Island Inn, a high end destination resort where rooms start at $3000CAN/ day for a ocean view studio to a $9000CAN/ day suite. All inclusive stays include natural locally grown food at three day minimum bookings. After we hike/drive Tilting cove, we head over to Joe Batt's arm for a tour of the Fogo Island Inn. Very modern, all locally sourced material and amenities. Furniture, Quilts, all locally sourced and made. We also visit the town of Fogo, visit local craft and pottery stores, see local arts and crafts. We finish the day with Fish and chips at the Cod Jigger Cafe. We even tasted a traditional Canadian dish, "Poutine", made from french fries, mozzarella cheese, and brown gravey. It was interesting, but don't think I will be a fan. We also visited the local doc and spoke with the fisherman bringing in fresh live lobster at $6 / lb. We even picked up a bag of Snow crab claws for $5 / lb. The cold weather persists, but we are making the best of it, looking forward to a bit warmer weather in the months to come.
