Yes today was Cod Day. We got up this morning to welcomed sunshine and warm temps in the 70's. We loaded up the kayak and our gear into the jeep to drive back to Tors Cove to fish for Cod with Craig and Kim. We stopped by a local store to pickup some Cod Jigs, line, and hooks. When we get to the cove, Kim has already been chatting with the locals and secured us a boat by a local named Darren O'Keefe, and oh boy what a day we had. The sun was out, no kayaking today, we were going Cod fishing with the local folk. We started off not so good the first hour snagging one small Cod and a couple of Sculpins. We moved over to the next island which has thousands of puffins, which we learn is the largest puffin colony in North America. As soon as we dropped our lines, BAM! we started catching Cod. Twice I pulled up two on one line. I was using a hand line with two additional hooks 3 feet apart. We caught our boat limit of 15 in less than an hour on this spot. It is officially Cod season in Newfoundland in July and August only on weekends Saturday through Monday. Each person can catch 5 fish and no more thatn 15 per boat. No license required, but you must keep all your fish, no culling. We came home with at least 5-8lbs of Cod fillets, and even some Tongue and Necks of the Cod. I baked up a couple fillets with just olive oil, salt, cayenne pepper, and lemon juice. Yummy, we will have Cod for a few weeks to eat for sure.
